Sappers Biking From London To Gibraltar In Under 300 Hours
Sappers from Nottingham have set off from London on a cycle challenge to Gibraltar to mark the Royal Engineers tercentenary year.
Members of 66 Works Group, part of 170 Infrastructure Support Engineer Group, were waved off at the Royal Albert Hall yesterday morning.
They plan to cycle the route in 300 hours and raise more than £10,000 for charity from the trip.
They'll specifically be finishing their route in Gibraltar because it is considered the birth place of the corps of the Royal Engineers, but the fact they've started their trip at the Royal Albert Hall is also significant.
The London Landmark was actually designed by the Royal Engineers, who oversaw its construction until it was finished in 1871.
The team will be cycling in a relay, hoping to cover 150 miles a day while cycling through Belgium and France and into Spain, and ending up at the sapper memorial in Gibraltar on October 1st.
