Tank 100 Commemorates A Unique History
It's not everyday one of the most iconic tourist spots in the world echoes to the rumble of tanks. Usually the site of a thousand selfies, street performers and the odd pigeon Trafalgar Square has played host to a unique centenarian.
Under the gaze of Nelson the 28-tonne Mark 1 battle tank replica rumbled into place at 5am, marking a hundred years since the tank was first used on the battlefields' of the Somme.
Tourists, enthusiasts and the relatives of the early tank pioneers posed with the extraordinary machine before it once more roared into life and brought the streets of the capitol to a standstill.
Driving under Admiralty Arch at a sedate 3mph the Mark 1 headed for Horse Guards Parade where it parked up alongside one of the British Army's current main battle tanks, the 62-tonne Challenger 2.
