Veteran's Medals Thought Lost Found in His Home

Medals thought to have been stolen from a war veteran on the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings have been found.

Dixie Dean, 92, is understood to have contacted police today to say that the medals previously thought to have been taken in a burglary have been discovered at his home in Whetstone, north London.

But Scotland Yard said jewellery was stolen and they are still hunting a suspect who struck on Friday morning as veterans and world leaders gathered in Normandy to pay tribute to those who fought and died in the D-Day landings in 1944.

A man claiming to represent a water company knocked on retired fireman Mr Dean's door and said he needed to check the water pressure.

He was allowed in and appeared to look at the taps in the kitchen before leaving a short while later.

The man, who spoke with an Irish accent, has been described as white and approximately 5ft 10ins tall and of stocky build.

He wore grey clothing which was similar to an engineer's outfit.

Mr Dean served with the Grenadier Guards during the Second World War, mainly in Italy and North Africa.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "Officers investigating a burglary at the Barnet home of a 92-year-old war veteran can confirm that his medals have been found today, Wednesday, June 11.

"Items of jewellery and the suspect remain outstanding."

No one has been arrested over the incident and police continue to appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
