HMS Dauntless has fired its gun for the first time in seven years.

The Type 45 destroyer posted on Twitter footage conducting her first 4.5" gun live firing.

According to HMS Dauntless, "the initial test firing involved operating the gun at a range of bearings and elevations".

The team from HMS Dauntless also sent a thank you to HMS Portland "for supporting".

This month the ship has been conducting drills as part of "ongoing training for new members of the boat and bridge teams".

HMS Dauntless said in a tweet: "They will soon be expected to quickly and safely launch and recover seaboats as part of a man overboard exercise."

The fortunes of Dauntless, one of the Royal Navy's most powerful warships, were turned around last year by the actions of Lieutenant Commander Annabel Roberts.

She received the Most Collaborative Award in the 2022 Women in Defence Awards for her work returning HMS Dauntless to action following a catalogue of repair delays.
