NATO Exercise In Baltic Sea Draws To A Close

A large deployment of 16 ships from nine different nations will soon conclude Exercise Baltops, in the Baltic Sea.

The Royal Navy and NATO's flagship HMS Ocean sailed from Plymouth to take part in the exercise, one of the largest in northern Europe, and trained along the way to fight mock ship's damage.
The annual workout tests the abilities of NATO maritime nations over 10 days and is aimed at improving co-operation between allies, whilst providing security to the Baltic Region.
HMS Ocean's Captain, Commander Nick Wood, said during the deployment:
"It is a great privilege to take part in the BALTOPS 16 exercise and the ship and ship’s company are very much looking forward to benefiting from the training opportunities across the spectrum of naval warfare whilst working closely with our NATO allies."
The NATO Task Group has seen HMS Iron Duke and her attached patrol boats simulate a threat towards the rest of the force. The real-life NATO allies have been forced to react to increasingly threatening behaviour from the Iron Duke as part of the training scenario.
