In pictures: RAF Typhoons strike an underground ISIS weapons facility in Syria

RAF aircraft have struck an underground facility allegedly holding weapons and explosives in the mountains north of Palmyra in Syria, the Ministry of Defence has revealed.

The mission involved RAF Typhoons FGR4s, supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker, in a joint strike with French aircraft at the weekend.

The aircraft fired Paveway IV guided bombs at several access tunnels down to the facility.

The MOD said the targets were successfully hit, while a more detailed assessment of the mission is being prepared.

"This action shows our UK leadership and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Defence Secretary John Healey said.

"I want to thank all the members of our Armed Forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage."

The department added that no civilians were harmed in the strike and that all the aircraft returned safely.
