A senior Royal Marines officer is to take charge of commanding and orchestrating the Royal Navy's global operations for the first time in history.

Brigadier Rich Cantrill will assume his latest role as the Commander Operations (COMOPS), to oversee the protection of UK shores and all Royal Navy and Royal Marine actions worldwide.

The current incumbent, Rear Admiral Edward Ahlgren, will hand over command to Brig Cantrill later this year, when the Royal Marines officer will assume the role as a Major General.

The Royal Navy said while the role has traditionally been filled by a submarine warfare officer, the new appointment reflects the evolving nature of the service's current operations.

It added: "Ultimately, this demonstrates that the best people are being appointed into the right roles, and always on the basis of a rigorous selection process."

Brig Cantrill said the COMOPS role is "the pinnacle" for all Royal Navy officers and he was "absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to deliver that role on behalf of the Fleet Commander and First Sea Lord".

The senior officer went on to say: "For me it means a chance to return to my own service after a fascinating time in the joint domain, where I have learned a great deal about modern multi-domain operations."

He added that the Royal Navy operations he will go on to command are "fundamental to protecting the nation and helping it to prosper".

COMOPS is responsible for the command and control of all deployed ships and submarines, Commando Forces and Fleet Air Arm aircraft.

Brig Cantrill, 49, has served with the Royal Marines for 28 years.

He previously commanded 3 Commando Brigade after roles in Plymouth-based 42 Commando, first leading Lima Company on operations in Afghanistan before taking over the unit as Commanding Officer in 2014.
