Aussies Take Time Out From Ashes To Meet Wounded Personnel

Australian cricket stars Mitchell Johnson, Josh Hazlewood and Ryan Harris have taken time out from their Ashes campaign to meet up with wounded servicemen and women undergoing rehabilitation.

The Australian trio also met with members of the Help for Heroes Cricket Club during their visit to DMRC Headley Court, who are using sport as part of their recovery.

They're now training to be part of the team selected for the Cricket for Heroes match at The Oval on 17th September - with a host of stars including former England captain Andrew Strauss also due to feature.

Steven Caruana, who was medically discharged from the Army two years ago and uses cricket as part of his recovery said:

“Playing for the Help for Heroes Cricket Club offers not only the physical benefits of keeping fit and active, but also gives huge psychological and social benefits too.

"The players have built self-esteem and a sense of pride since being part of the club and most importantly, the Help for Heroes Cricket Club gives us the chance to be part of a close-knit group again, something many of us haven’t experienced since leaving the Forces."

"We’re all looking forward to the match in September and would encourage everyone to get along.”

Help for Heroes has been involved with Sports Recovery since 2008, and in the past year alone have offered 300 events across 50 different sports enabling over 2,000 wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans to take part in adaptive sports from grassroots through to performance level.

Sport helps mentally and physically wounded veterans regain their confidence, provides a purpose for someone to focus on once again after suffering a life changing injury or illness.

If you're interested in attending the Cricket for Heroes match, meanwhile, tickets are still currently available...
