'Battalion 1944' To Bring WW2 Video Games Into The Modern Age
A next-generation World War 2 video game has been crowdfunded in under three days, raising an impressive £200,000.
Battalion 1944 developed by UK Bulkhead Interactive will let players battle in Normandy and other historic real-world battle sites.
Inspired by old-school shooters such as Call of Duty Two and Medal of Honour the game makers want to bring “intense & balanced infantry combat” to current generation video games.
World War Two military combat games achieved mainstream success in the early 2000’s however became less popular as modern military shooters such as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare hit record sales figures.
In the game’s Kickstarter campaign the developers say that they want to create a skill based shooter and not offer “game breaking advantages to players of higher ranks”. Modern shooters have been criticized by some games journalist’s for allowing players who invest more time into a game a greater advantage.
They also plan to avoid current industry trends such as including micro-transactions (charging a small fee to give players an item or advantage).
The game’s budget of three hundred thousand pounds is much smaller than the budget of ‘triple A’ games, which can cost upwards of 100 million pounds to produce. The developers aim to keep the cost of the game down by only developing a multiplayer experience, without a single player campaign.
Battalion 1944 is planned for an early 2017 release on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.
