MPs Raise Concerns Over Closure Of 91 Military Bases

Last year the Ministry of Defence announced the closure of 91 military sites, in a bid to save nearly £3 billion in running costs by 2040.

Now, MPs have been discussing the impact of those closures in Westminster Hall.

The aim of the MoD's 'Better Defence Estate Strategy' is to improve military capability and to rationalise the current estate.

It says it's spending billions on maintaining an estate that doesn't meet the needs of the British Armed Forces.

Many MPs raised concerns that recruitment and retention locally could suffer and that the loss of historic bonds between the local community and the military will be lost.

The MoD, though, says it's determined to deliver a better defence estate, as well as improved accommodation and more stability for military families.
