"The Armed Forces are always in our thoughts, and perhaps never more so than today, when so many of us are lucky enough to be enjoying Christmas at home with their loved ones.

"Each and every one of your deserves our continued thanks, for your bravery, your integrity, and your hard work."

"From peacekeeping to providing humanitarian aid, to combating terrorism, every day you're defending the freedoms we all enjoy, and you are rightly recognised as the very best in the world.

"I want to extend my condolences to the comrades, friends, and families of those who have fallen over the last year in the service of their country, and to offer my very best wishes for a speedy recovery to those who've been hurt and injured."

"For those of you spending Christmas on duty here in Scotland, or many miles away from home and loved ones, I'd like to wish you and your families a very merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year."
