A Victim's Testimony: The Sexist Culture That Existed At Deepcut

An Army recruit who was raped during an exercise in the late 1990s has spoken out about her experience on camera for the first time.

It comes after an inquest into the death of Private Cheryl James at Deepcut Barracks.

Pte James was one of four young soldiers who died amongst an atmosphere of bullying and abuse at Deepcut between 1995 and 2002.

The verdict of the inquest was that the Army had failed in its duty of care to the four recruits, citing this as a factor in James' suicide.

The Ministry of Defence says things have changed, with Ofsted now inspecting all of its training establishments.

But the need to understand what went wrong haunts the families of the recruits, and there are calls for a public inquiry into all four deaths.

Sarah - not her real name - was just 17 when she was sexually assaulted by an officer.

He was later convicted and jailed for seven years.

She's been speaking to our reporter Kaija Larke.

For legal reasons we've protected Sarah's identity and used an actor's voice.
