WATCH: Army Detonates WWII Grenades In Wiltshire
A British Army bomb disposal team has detonated a number of Second World War grenades found in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to a building site on Wednesday after builders unearthed phosphorous grenades.
The simple devices were issued to the Home Guard during the conflict to throw at tanks in case of an invasion.
Bottles were filled with phosphorous, which would ignite and burn once the glass shattered.
The Army team, which was called in from Tidworth, carried out a controlled explosion.
People living in the immediate area were warned to stay inside with doors and windows shut, as a large amount of smoke was expected to be generated.
Roads close to where the devices were found were closed to traffic.
Two crews from Trowbridge fire station initially attended at the scene, together with a support appliance from Warminster which provided lighting, and one crew from Trowbridge.
