UK Space Command has announced the name of its new headquarters at RAF High Wycombe.

After receiving nearly 100 submissions from cadets across the country, UK Space Command announced the name of the new HQ would be Protego.

The name, which means 'protect' in Latin was submitted by Cadet Mominah Zulqurnain from 44F (Bradford) Air Cadets.

UK Space Command was officially formed in 2021 and is made up of staff from all three services of the UK's Armed Forces.

The naming of the headquarters in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, was announced in a video on Twitter showing a rocket launch-style countdown and shots of earth from space.

Representatives from across the whole of UK Space Command voted on the name.

"We appreciate the excellent ideas submitted by cadets across the nation – the standard was very high, and thank you to the [Sea Cadets] for hosting the competition website," UK Space Command said on Twitter.

As well as providing control and command of defence's space capabilities, Space Command also oversees Skynet Satellite Communications – responsible for providing satellite communication to both the British military and the UK's allies.

The base will also be responsible for RAF Fylingdales, which provides a continuous ballistic missile early warning service to the United Kingdom and United States, monitoring the world's airspace.
