Army Dominates Inter-Services Squash Team Championships

The Army's squash players took the titles at this year's Inter-Services Squash Team Championships in Aldershot, whilst the RAF claimed the Under-25 prize.

The men's tournament featured a Senior Service side hoping to gain only their second crown in 55 years, after taking top spot 12 months ago.

However, TJ Walters came unstuck against the Army’s Luke Doddington. It was the Royal Armoured Corps Major who won the match 3-2, giving the Army a bright start.

The Navy lost their second match too, and it was down to Matt Ellicot to keep his team in the tournament.

But, he was hampered by injury and forced to retire, and the Army won the opening two games.

That clinched overall victory, with the Air Force finishing third. Matt spoke to Forces Network about the loss, saying:

"The Army really had the bit between their teeth to take the title from us - and credit to them, they pulled out the right team on the day and pipped us to the post."

"We gave it our best but it just wasn’t enough on the day."

The women's competition saw the RAF push the Army all the way - and it came down to Jen Spencer from the latter taking on RAF Northolt's Annabel Bacon. Jen took the victory, and was proud of her achievement:

"I was a bit nervous. There was a lot of pressure on this game as the decider. Abbi was very keen to win."

"I just knew I needed to go on and have a really good game, and I think that's all that anyone asks."
