Lieutenant Alex Paske has returned from the Yaounde African Judo Open with a silver medal in the -73kg category.
Representing Great Britain in Africa, Lt Paske got all the way to the final in his weight class before he lost to Fethi Nourine.
Despite the loss, his second-place finish was the best GB result of the tournament with Rachael Hawkes’ bronze the only other medal.
Lt Paske put in a year-best result to claim his silver, with results at Buenos Aires and Lima earlier in the year failing to secure a medal.
The British athlete received a bye for the first round which meant he was raring to go for his quarter-final bout with Ebenezer Njoh Ndongue Miano.
After a victory against the Cameroonian, Lt Paske beat Joseph Hell Bapou to seal a place in the final.
However, that final bout proved to be a step too far as Algerian Fethi Nourine took the win and the gold medal.
The victory is Nourine’s third gold medal of 2018 and the favourite proved to be too much for the GB Army Judo star.
