British Army win women's Inter Services T20 cricket on record-breaking day

Watch: Connie Cant special sees British Army through to victory in women's Inter Services T20

The British Army have been crowned women's Inter Services T20 cricket champions 2024 thanks to a record-breaking 125 not out from star Connie Cant.

Arundel Castle in West Sussex was the picturesque setting for the competition which began with a clash between the RAF and the Navy.

On a morning that began bright and breezy, the RAF batters looked to replicate the conditions – opener Emilee Steele, with 77, helped her side to 197-5 in their 20 overs.

In response, the Royal Navy never really looked like challenging the total – their effort was limited to 98-4 with a top score of 23 from Anna Sales.

In the second game, the Army flexed their muscles – an opening stand of 176 between Georgie and Connie Cant helped them to a mammoth total of 270-1 in 20 overs.

Connie Cant quickly got to her half-century on her way to a record-breaking 125 not out – confirmed as the highest men's or women's inter services T20 score.

After the fall of the first and only wicket, Cant added further runs with Amanda Potgeiter, who chipped in with 52 not out.

The Army then restricted their opponents to 88 for 6 with a tight bowling display from Shema Wright who got 2 for 7 in her four overs.

And sadly, that was that in terms of play for the rest of the day.

The umpires and ground staff looked at the chance of playing a five-over-a-side match, the minimum required to constitute a game, but the relentless moisture put paid to their efforts.

The British Army won overall on net run-rate and it was a memorable day for Connie Cant who was named player of the tournament.

The Army were crowned Inter Service T20 champions, next up is a trip to Portsmouth for the 40-over competition in July.
