Inter Services T20 cricket: New-look Army 'expect to win' at Lords

Watch: Corporal Varun Bali speaks to BFBS Sport reporter Julian Evans after their match with Marylebone Cricket Club.

British Army batsman Corporal Varun Bali has revealed that the reigning champions "expect to win" at the 2023 Inter Services T20 Championships.

The event will see the Army defend their title with matches against the RAF and Royal Navy live on the Forces News YouTube channel on 10 May.

The men in red will look to win the title for the fourth successive tournament and Bali said that's what the team expect from themselves.

"We expect to win," said Cpl Bali who was top scorer against the MCC in Aldershot. "That's the main goal.

"We've got a great team, a great skipper who leads from the front, and every single person within the squad, they're all great.

"We live like brothers and we play like brothers too."

As reigning champions, it's expected that the players would feel some pressure to perform at Lord's but, according to Cpl Bali, that's not the case.

He said: "There's never a pressure. We just want to play the best game we can.

"The best team who play the best game will win."

Don't miss Inter Services T20 cricket championships live from Lord's on 9 May on Forces News YouTube channel.

This year, the Army have a number of new faces in their team including Keddy Lesporis and Oskar Kulk.

Cpl Bali says it's a testament to the development system the service team have in place.

"This is the best part of being an Army development side," he said.

"This is where the people start to develop them as part of the first team. I was one of them.

"All of us come from that stepping stone so it's great to see new guys coming in.

"We lost some experienced people from our team but it's been replaced by some very new, talented cricketers."
