A group of junior soldiers were "remarkably fortunate" to find a spot to watch England and Wales clash in the Fifa World Cup while on a training exercise.

Lieutenant Colonel Mike Butler, Commanding Officer of the Army Foundation College, posted some behind scenes shots of how some soldiers managed to watch England's 3-0 World Cup triumph over Wales.

"Whilst out on Ex LIONS CLAW recce patrols, Cambrai Company Junior Soldiers were remarkably fortunate to find an enemy position with a generator, a projector and sufficient data signal to stream the big game. What a stroke of luck!" Lt Col Butler said.

Lt Col Butler also revealed that Waterloo Company were also able to find a way to watch the game.

After cruising to a 3-0 victory over Wales – thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden – England secured their place in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

They will face Senegal in the next stage of the competition on Sunday, after topping the group.

The Prince of Wales said the Welsh football team should be "very proud" for playing with "heart" throughout the World Cup after their loss to England.

Prince William and the Princess of Wales's official Twitter page posted the message congratulating the team for reaching the tournament for the first time since 1958.

"Cymru, be very proud. First World Cup since '58. This tournament, you've played with heart and pride. Looking forward to seeing you at Euro 2024!" the message read.

The Prince earlier took a neutral stance in a social media post about the crunch game in Qatar, after previously saying he could not drop his support for the English team.
