Royal Air Force athlete Flight Lieutenant Nicole Burger has made history after becoming the first South African woman to qualify for the Olympic Winter Games in Skeleton.

She officially sealed her spot at next month's Milano-Cortina games after she finished tenth at the Europe Cup in Winterberg, Germany.

Based at RAF High Wycombe, Flt Lt Burger has made sensational strides in the world of Skeleton and became the first South African to win a sliding event at the North America Cup earlier this season, where she currently leads the overall standings.

Reacting in a post on social media, Flt Lt Burger said: "This journey has been a wild ride, full of thrills, spills, and laughter.

"None of this would've been possible without the incredible support from the Royal Air Force – thank you for believing in me and supporting me every step of the way!

"And to my wonderful sponsors at the Royal British Legion, your support means the world and helped make this dream a reality."

She continued: "And to my amazing coaches – thank you from the bottom of my heart! Your guidance, endless patience, and belief in me turned this crazy dream into reality. Couldn't have done it without you!

"Big love to my friends & family back home – your cheers from the couch, over the phone and message check-ups are what carried me across the world!

"South Africa, let's bring the heat to the ice! See you in Milano Cortina!"

Nicole Burger was born in Cape Town, South Africa. She moved with her parents to the UK when she was a child.

She has a rich sporting background with previous experience in athletics, horse riding and rugby sevens, although injury hampered her progression.

After joining the RAF six years ago, she was introduced to skeleton and began competing at Inter Services level for the RAF. She then began her international career competing for South Africa.

The 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympic Winter Games run from 6-22 February.
