RAF Senior Aircraftman Liam Sanford has helped England reach the Men's Hockey World Cup quarter-final.

The 22-year-old put in a player of the match performance as goals from Will Calnan and Luke Taylor sealed a 2-0 win over New Zealand.

The win means England will play Olympic champions Argentina on Wednesday for a place in the semi-finals.

SAC Sanford’s performance helped his side keep control of the game and he was rewarded with the player of the match award from the tournament’s officials.

Calnan’s goal in the 25th minute was created by a superb pass by Sanford. An amazing cross-field delivery was perfect for Phil Roper to bring down and lay it on a plate for Calnan to tap in.

Sanford himself could have doubled England’s lead in the second period. His fizzing shot looked destined for the net but a good save from New Zealand goalkeeper Mike Joyce kept out with a good save.

A good set-piece routine allowed Taylor the time to blast his shot past Joyce to double England’s lead and Danny Kerry’s side held on to a comfy win.

The win means a clash with Argentina who beat both New Zealand and Spain in the group stage.
