RAF women win in style against Royal Navy in Inter Service opener

The Royal Air Force women’s rugby team have won their Inter Service Championship opener at Brickfields by a commanding 12-34 against the Royal Navy.

The RAF scored six tries against a Navy team who are in a building phase with a new head coach.

The Air Force showed their pedigree in the early stages of the game with Welsh international Carys Williams-Morris getting the first try on the board four minutes in.

The RAF backed up their early try with Rebecca Defilippo powering her way through the Navy defence to dot over the line, soon followed by Morris again for her second try and a commanding 0-17 lead.

The Navy, in their first Inter Service Championships under new coach Sarah Jenkins, showing how much progress they’ve made with a try by Rebecca Addis amid a strong RAF defence.

But it wasn’t long before the RAF responded with another try by Defilippo to earn a commanding 5-22 lead at half time.

The second half saw player of the match Orla Proctor score the Air Force’s fifth and sixth tries expending their lead to 5-34.

But in the final minutes of the game, Williams-Morris was yellow carded by the referee for a high tackle which also gave the Navy a penalty try.

At full time, the RAF take the victory with a 12-34 buffer from the Navy, as both teams now march on to face the Army with the Navy heading to Twickenham on 4 May.
