Royal Navy U23s bags solid win in Portsmouth ahead of Inter Services

Watch: The Royal Navy U23s take on the University of Portsmouth in an Inter Services warm-up fixture.

The Royal Navy under-23s have put their preparations for the Inter Services in a good spot after a strong 27-0 win in a warm-up fixture against the University of Portsmouth.

The reigning Inter Services champions got off the starting blocks well with an early try from Charlie Davis, which was quickly followed up by Ben Callard with another try minutes later, as Harry Mayes successfully converted to put the Navy up 12-0.

With the students from the University of Portsmouth testing the Navy with a strong defence, it was Jack Davies who would make it over the line at the 38-minute mark to extend the Navy's lead at 17-0 before half time.

In the second half, Callard came through again with another try to complete his brace, extending the Navy's lead even further at 22-0.

And just 10 minutes later, skipper Andy Watson positioned himself perfectly to retrieve the ball and dot over the line amid a strong student defence.

At the sound of the final whistle, the Navy proved too much for the University of Portsmouth and a 27-0 win will give the reigning Inter Services champions a spring in their step ahead of their first fixture against the Royal Air Force on 15 November.

Royal Navy U23s Head Coach POPT Ben Priddey said: "Friday night was a good fixture for us and with three wins on the bounce has set us up nicely for Inter Services.

"I believe we are ready and in a really good place for RAF week and we can't wait to get started.

"I have about 70% of the team in my head but there will be a few discussions this week with the coaching staff to confirm what combinations to go with, which will hopefully be enough to take down the RAF."

All three matches from the U23s Inter Services will be broadcast live on the Forces News YouTube channel.
