The Ukrainian town of Vuhledar is believed to be under attack on three sides by advancing Russian forces in the southeast of the country.

According to the MOD's latest intelligence update, Russia has made further gains around the town and continues to keep the Ukrainian defenders under pressure.

"They [Russian forces] are already contesting the outskirts of the town, against which Russia has made repeated assaults since 2022," said the MOD in its latest intelligence update.

"Russian forces have made further gains in the vicinity of Vuhledar in southeastern Ukraine. It is highly likely that Russian forces now threaten the town from three sides," it added.

"It is likely that Russian forces will continue to pressure on this heavily defended part of the line over the next week.

"In central Donetsk oblast, Russian forces are fighting within the eastern half of Toretsk and south of Pokrovsk. They have made only slow progress around Chasiv Yar."

Chasiv Yar is another key city in Ukraine and is located on the high ground.

Russia could gain a significant advantage when using artillery to target the Ukrainian line if its forces manage to capture the city.

The MOD believes Moscow is attacking multiple objectives at the same time, to stretch Kyiv's forces.

However, whilst attacking multiple locations Russia may struggle to amass forces on a single point.
