Soldier, the official magazine of the British Army, celebrates its 80th birthday this year and the National Army Museum is showcasing it in a short documentary.

Since its first edition in February 1945, approved by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, its journalists have reported on every conflict the British Army has been involved in.

Soldier Magazine describes itself as the Army's primary means of internal communication outside the chain of command, and the National Army Museum has opened The Story of Soldier Magazine which will be on display until 6 July 2025.

Copies of the glossy magazine are sent to every base, barracks and operational theatre where UK troops are posted.

The short documentary at the museum will explain how Soldier started as a fortnightly news publication produced by the Army Welfare Service to inform troops of the British Liberation Army fighting Nazi forces across Europe.

Some of the earliest editions of Soldier Magazine, including an original first edition (February 1945) and the celebratory VE Day edition (May 1945), will be displayed alongside the short film, with magazine covers from across the decades.

Visitors will also be able to take home a free copy of the magazine's most recent edition.

Brigadier (Retired) Justin Maciejewski, director of the National Army Museum, said: "For 80 years, Soldier Magazine has covered every major conflict and explored issues at the heart of the soldier's world.

"As the national home for the Army's history and heritage, we're delighted to partner with the magazine's committed team to reveal the remarkable story behind this much-loved publication in a new short film, which visitors can enjoy in a dedicated gallery space.

"In the year we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we're proud to celebrate the wartime birth of a magazine which still does so much to enrich Army life."

In its most recent edition, Soldier provides a rare insight of the physical tests would-be recruits must undertake before applying for the Special Air Service (SAS), the Special Boat Service (SBS) and other special forces, to help de-mystify the selection process so that more personnel would sign up.

Steve Muncey, managing editor of Soldier Magazine, said: "It's a must-see for any avid readers of the title and in just a few minutes manages to encapsulate what the title has contributed to soldiers' lives, helping to change policy on occasion and boosting morale."
