Royal Navy sailor's moving Remembrance poem pays tribute to those lost at sea

A Royal Navy poet has shared a moving poem paying tribute to sailors and marines lost at sea ahead of Remembrance commemorations this weekend.

Petty Officer Ben Taylor, known as the Yorkshire Prose, posted a video of him reciting the poignant and heart-rending verses while walking along a quiet beach.

In one verse, Petty Officer Taylor says: "And being Royal Navy, man and boy, I try and bring folks' minds along with me.

"So spare a thought for those brave souls whose lives were lost at sea."

The video of Petty's Officer Taylor's poignant words has been watched more than 100,000 times on X, with dozens of people praising the wordsmith.

"So this is for all who've sailed, away from home and off to war that lie now in the briny depths and never come ashore," another line says.

The powerful poem ends with the sailor saying: "On all the oceans white caps flow.

"There are no crosses row on row.

"But those who sleep beneath the sea.

"Sleep in peace your country's free."

Petty Officer Taylor is well-known in the military for his poetry.

He is the Royal Navy rugby league captain and in December last year performed at the Navy's Sports Awards.

Two months earlier, he gave the England rugby league squad a rousing pep talk ahead of the world cup with his eloquent way of words.
