Military medals that were awarded to an SAS soldier are going up for auction.

Sergeant John Scott fought alongside Paddy Mayne in the Special Air Service and was also Mentioned In Despatches for his service in the Second World War.

The group of SAS medals, auctioned by Harper Field, include the Military Medal, General Service Medal with clasp for Palestine, 1939/1945 Star, Africa Star with clasp for 8th Army, Italy Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal and War Medal with Mentioned In Despatches emblem.

Sgt  Scott served in the Western Desert, Italy and Northwest Europe in World War Two.

He also manned the Vickers and Browning machine guns alongside Paddy Mayne - one of the founders of the SAS - during the action which resulted in Mayne's fourth DSO.

This took place in April 1945 when Mayne led two armoured jeep squadrons through the frontlines of northwest Germany during Operation Howard.

This operation was carried out by B and C Squadrons, 1st Special Air Service, to provide reconnaissance for the Canadian 4th Armoured Division in its advance to Oldenburg.

The auctioned items also include Sgt Scott's Mentioned In Despatches certificate, a War Office letter of thanks for his service, various early photographs including portrait examples from when he was serving in the Royal Scots Greys and a hand-drawn operational map of southern Italy.

Scott, who was captain by the time the war ended, met his future wife in Belgium during the armistice and then worked for the family printing business.

They subsequently moved to Toadsmoor, near Stroud, in Gloucestershire to continue in the printing trade.

Harper Field estimates £10,000-£15,000 for the lot, which will go live for auction at 10:00 UK time on 7 February.
