King wears Royal Engineers tie during historic Bundestag speech and visit to UK troops in Germany

Watch: Kings meets British and German troops.

The King wore a Royal Engineers tie during a historic speech to Germany's Bundestag before meeting troops from the Corps based in the country.

King Charles III was announced as Colonel-in-Chief of the Corps earlier this week - a rank previously held by his mother, the late Queen - and wore the maroon and navy tie as he addressed Germany's parliament and also later on when meeting British personnel.

After speaking at the Bundestag, the King met soldiers from the German-British Amphibious Engineer Battalion 130 on Thursday afternoon in Finowfurt, north-east of Berlin.

The joint unit was created in 2021 and the UK contingent comes from the British Army's 23 Amphibious Engineer Squadron, Royal Engineers.

The unit acts as Nato's unique bridge builders and the King was given an insight into their capabilities with a demonstration, before stepping foot on the bridge.

His Majesty was also presented with a bottle of port as a gift during the visit.

Commonly known as the Sappers, the Corps of Royal Engineers was founded in 1716 and gained the Royal prefix in 1787.

The Engineers are multi-skilled soldiers and combat engineers who provide global military engineering and technical support to the Armed Forces and their allies.

The Corps has recently been deployed to Estonia, Poland, and Cyprus and along with the Queen's Gurkha Engineers, they will support the King's Coronation on 6 May.

Earlier, the King received a standing ovation in the Bundestag after a speech lasting more than 23 minutes.

He urged the Bundestag to help write a new chapter in Anglo-German relations and told a packed chamber he wished to "renew the pledge of friendship between our nations".
