American forces have engaged and destroyed three Houthi attack drones in the Red Sea, according to US Central Command.

The US military said it conducted a self-defence engagement against the uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) which were being used in an attempt to endanger US and coalition personnel.

"It was determined the USVs presented an imminent threat to US and coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region," said US Central Command.

Central Command added: "In the past 24 hours US Central Command (USCENTCOM) forces conducted a self-defence engagement, destroying three Iranian-backed Houthi uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) in the Red Sea.

"These actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure.

"This continued malign and reckless behaviour by the Iranian-backed Houthis threatens regional stability and endangers the lives of mariners across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden."

This is the latest military engagement between Western forces and the Iranian-backed Houthis who have been responsible for attacking and harassing merchant shipping in the Red Sea.

Earlier this year, the Royal Navy's HMS Diamond shot down a Houthi missile, with the incident standing as the first combat interception of this type in more than 30 years.

The US Navy has previously had to contend with anti-ship ballistic missiles being used against commercial shipping.
