A remarkable challenge is taking place across the UK this month – 31 cold-water dips in 31 locations over 31 days.

The Cold Dip Commando challenge was originally conceived by Royal Marines veteran Tim Crossin, affectionately known as the 'Cold Dip Commando', to raise funds for four key charities: RMA – The Royal Marines Charity, Lymphoma Action, Rock 2 Recovery and the Bowra Foundation.

Tragically, Tim died on 3 December 2024, surrounded by his family, after an eight-year battle with cancer.

In honour of Tim's memory, his family and friends are now continuing the challenge he had planned, diving into the cold waters each day throughout January.

Tim's daughter Kelly paid tribute to her father, saying: "I've never known someone to inspire people how Dad did.

"He was so courageous no matter what was thrown at him, he never let things negatively affect him, even with a life expectancy thrown at him.

"He continued to be humble and kind no matter the situation."

He joined the Royal Marines at 16, "knowing he wanted to serve his country and make a difference, and he did that every single day", Kelly said.

Among those taking part in one of the dips was Nicola Finlay from the Rosyth Military Wives Choir.

Speaking to BFBS Radio as she entered the water, Nicola admitted her nerves ahead of the plunge, but was buoyed by the camaraderie.

"This is going to be my first-ever cold dip. We'll see if I survive!" she joked.

Describing her experience as she ventured into the water, Nicola said, "The sun is shining, I can feel the heat on my face, and the bridges are left and right of me.

"In front of me is North Queensferry looking gorgeous. There are a lot of happy, smiley people – but they're all bonkers!"

The charity dips are drawing a mix of participants, including Royal Marines veterans, serving personnel, reservists and members of local cold dip groups.

Even a few four-legged swimmers made an appearance.

Nicola reflected on the cause, adding, "It's really important to support these charities. We all hope we'll never need them, but we want them to be there for those who do."
