Watch: Royal Engineer captures terrifying moment avalanche engulfs him

A captain in the Royal Engineers caught an avalanche on video as it hurtled down a mountain straight at him, before burying him alive.

Harry Shimmin, 27, was on a guided tour of the Tian Shan mountains in Kyrgystan, when he separated briefly from the group to take pictures as snow and ice started barrelling down the mountain.

Keen to capture the rare and dangerous footage, he did not flinch until the very last moment when the avalanche came over his head.

He survived the avalanche by jumping for shelter behind a large rock, but can be heard on the footage saying "Oh, dear God" as he realises that he is standing right in its path.

The rest of Captain Shimmin's group also survived the incident.
