Russian warplanes violating Nato airspace avoid being shot down – at least for now

Nato losing patience as Russia keeps violating airspace

The number of Russian airspace violations is on the rise – and from drone incursions over Poland, Sweden and Denmark to MiG-31 fighter jets entering Estonian airspace, Nato's response was fast and unanimous.

Estonia asked for urgent consultations under Article 4 of the Washington Treaty, and Operation Eastern Sentry was launched, sending dozens of European jets, including RAF Typhoons, to defend Poland's border with Russia.

But while the Italian F-35s that were sent to intercept the Russian MiGs did not shoot them down, some Nato members are suggesting a different outcome may be the result if Russia maintains this provocative course of action.
