Ascension Island Runway Closed

Ascension Island Runway

The deterioration of Ascension Islands runway surface has forced the MOD to re-route aircraft whilst repairs are carried out.

The closure has caused disruption to both military and civilian access to the Falklands.

This comes a year after the UK Government banned large aircraft from landing on a newly built runway in neighbouring island St Helena, costing £250,000,000.

St Helena now relies on flights to RAF Ascension in order to reach the UK.

HMS St Helena was brought out of retirement to help service both islands, but the vessel is currently out of action due to a leak.

A post, earlier today, on RAF Brize Norton Facebook said:

Due to runway repairs required to the Ascension Island runway, the MOD is temporarily rerouting the South Atlantic Airbridge via an alternative location. The MOD continues to advise all passengers to contact their local booking office for up to date flight departure / arrival information prior to travel. We will ensure the continuation of military support to the Falkland Islands through an alternative hub, and are working with the Foreign Office to put in place measures to support the people who live and work on Ascension Island.
