Cadets Spell 'RAF 100' To Welcome Veterans Flown Into Biggin Hill

RAF cadets formed a human RAF 100 sign to welcome the veterans.

Veterans were flown into Biggin Hill as cadets formed a human RAF 100 sign below to celebrate the anniversary.

The special event was held at Biggin Hill airport in Kent, where veterans passed the RAF baton onto a cadet, so it can continue its journey around the country to commemorate the RAF's centenary year.

200 cadets formed the human sign to welcome the veterans.

World War II veteran Martin Grugeon, who flew Spitfires, was flown into Biggin Hill in a plane which has been used by the Royal family and the Prime Minister. He said:

"I'm very honoured to be here, as well as lucky to have survived and I'm very appreciative to the people that care about what happened to my generation"

"I was sitting in the same seat that the Prime Minister and the Queen have sat in... a good story to tell".

After landing, Mr Grugeon, alongside another veteran, called Tom passed the baton onto Cadet Warrant Officer, Billie.

Speaking to Forces News after being handed the baton, Billie described it as an "honour".

"It felt like... an honour.

"It felt amazing to be a part of such a big celebration".

The baton has been travelling the country since April 1 and will continue to until July 10 when it will finish its journey at the Horseguards Parade in London.

The day commemorated the bravery and heroism of the veterans while symbolising the future of the RAF - the cadets.
