Climbing Everest: The Former Gurkha And Double Amputee Who’s Aiming High
A former Gurkha soldier who lost both legs above the knee after an IED blast in Afghanistan has taken on the challenge of climbing Mount Everest.
Hari Budha Magar served with the Royal Gurkha Rifles for 15 years and was injured in 2010 when on foot patrol.
In four months’ time, Hari’s hoping to be the first double amputee above the knee to attempt to climb Mount Everest.
Earlier this year he became the first double amputee to reach the summit of Mera Peak (6,476 meters).
Hari attributes his success to his positive outlook, he said:
“Life isn’t about moaning; it’s about making a difference. I survived and this is the time for me to make a difference."

Hari added:
“Anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it, you can do it. Discipline, work harder and anything can happen.”
Best friend, and fellow Gurkha, Krishna will join Hari on his expedition, he said:
“He’s one of my best friends and we said let’s climb together and make history… he’s mentally and physically very, very strong. It makes it easier walking with him because he is so positive."
Hari hopes his Mount Everest challenge will inspire others to keep on working towards their dreams.
