The Prime Minister is "improving" and "sitting up in bed", Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said.

Boris Johnson, who tested positive for coronavirus nearly two weeks ago, was admitted to intensive care at St Thomas Hospital on Monday evening after his health deteriorated.

Speaking at the daily Downing Street press conference, Mr Sunak said the PM was in "excellent care" and that his condition was "improving".

"I can also tell you that he has been sitting up in bed and engaging positively with the clinical team, Mr Sunak said.

"The Prime Minister is not only my colleague and my boss but also my friend, and my thoughts are with him and his family."

Earlier on Wednesday, a Number 10 spokesperson said Mr Johnson was responding to treatment but remained in intensive care.

The spokesperson said the PM remains in "good spirits".

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is currently deputising for Mr Johnson.
