Britons returning from the coronavirus-hit Chinese city of Wuhan could be held in quarantine at a military base.

Around 200 UK nationals are thought to be in the city, with a Government source claiming to Press Association that a facility is "ready for them to arrive".

However, the Ministry of Defence says all options are being examined.

The death toll in China from coronavirus has risen to 132, with confirmed infections surging to nearly 6,000.

When British citizens return they will be "safely isolated" and will spend a fortnight in quarantine, according to the Government source.

"I think it’s going to be a military base," the source said.

"We have got the facility ready for them to arrive."

British Airways has suspended all flights to and from mainland China as the Government finalises urgent plans to bring Britons back from the coronavirus-hit province of Hubei.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock tweeted: "We are working hard to get British nationals back from Wuhan. Public safety is the top priority.

"Anyone who returns from Wuhan will be safely isolated for 14 days, with all necessary medical attention."

Four cases of the virus have been confirmed in Germany, making it the second European country to report cases, after France.

130 people have been tested for coronavirus in the UK so far, all of which came back negative.
