Property buyers looking for an iconic building with panoramic sea views are being sought for a former fort overlooking England's south coast.

The former Napoleonic War fort is being auctioned off for just £70,000 and could be converted into a home.

The Martello Tower in Dymchurch, Kent, is among 103 that were built between 1805 and 1812 when Britain was faced with the threat of invasion from Napoleon's France.

The round tower stands 40ft high and its walls are made of solid stone which was designed to ward off cannon fire.

The flat roof allowed a 360-degree view for a single artillery gun and the tower typically had a garrison of one officer and up to 25 soldiers.

With panoramic sea views from the rooftop, the tower currently stands in the middle of a public car park.

Auctioneers Clive Emson says the iconic building may be suitable for conversion into a home.

"Clearly they are well built as they wouldn’t have survived for so long"

The tower is being offered with a freehold guide price of £70-75,000.

Guy Ruddy, who lives in another tower in the town says he will be going to the auction to see if he can buy it and transform it into a seafood restaurant.

The 54-year-old said: "This one is in a car park so it's not a very good position for a home.

"But there aren't many good seafood restaurants in the town and I think with the sea views it would be a great place for one."

The tower will be auctioned off at The Clive Emson Conference Centre, Kent County Showground, Maidstone, at 11am on December 11th.
