Exclusive: Ukraine representative in UK criticises broken promises over weapons for war
The Ukrainian acting ambassador to the UK has claimed Ukraine has not been given the weapons it was promised by nations in the west.
Speaking exclusively to Forces News, Eduard Fesko, Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission, said that Ukraine needed weapons including artillery shells, heavy armour, long-range missiles, air defences, and fighter jets.
"All the things that play a huge role in conflict nowadays. And we do not think we have been given what we have been promised," the diplomat said.
Acting Ambassador Fesko was attending an event at the Canadian High Commission in London, for the opening of a new art exhibition which aims to increase the public's awareness of the impact of war in Ukraine.
Given that Canada has drawn criticism for a year-long delay in the delivery of advanced air defence systems, his comments may be viewed by some as timely.
The war in Ukraine will enter its third year on 24 February.
It's a year that is expected to be tough politically for President Zelenksy, as international weapons support may face challenges linked to elections in the United States and elsewhere.
Asked whether he worried that support from allies was waning, Mr Fesko said: "There can be some complacency or getting used to the situation."
He added: "That is something we do not want.
"We want this war to be over. And for this war to be over it has to be won. And Russia needs to be beaten back decisively."
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth ÂŁ2.5bn for the next financial year.
Mr Sunak also announced the signing of a new 'Ukraine-UK Agreement' on security co-operation, which, according to the Government, will see the UK "continue to provide for Ukraine's security, including intelligence sharing, cyber security, medical and military training, and defence industrial cooperation".
The Acting Ambassador offered no specific criticism of the UK's provision of equipment to Ukraine.
