Full-Sized Lancaster Bomber Memorial Gets Go Ahead

Lancaster Bomber statue

A full-size sculpture of a Lancaster Bomber is to be built on the Lincolnshire Border after plans were approved.

The statue is to be built as a tribute to RAF bomber crews who served in the Second World War.

It will be constructed next to the A46 between Newark and Lincoln.

The charity responsible for the tribute, the Bomber Country Gateway Trust, said they hope that the memorial will be ready for Armistice Day which takes place in November.

The trust have currently raised around £20,000 of the £100,000 needed, according to charity member Ken Sadler:

"Hopefully now we that we've got planning officially I think that donations will come in much quicker."

The structure will be a large one, with a wingspan of around 31m and mounted on a 10-12m stand, reaching a height of about 30m.

The aircraft will have the same markings as a bomber based at the nearby RAF Swinderby and is designed to look like it’s in flight.

Mr Sadler said the aircraft will look like it is "heading home"; he said:

"The positional angle of it means that when it is viewed from the road most of the support structure will be behind the wings so it will look like it is in flight."

The trust said a ground-breaking ceremony attended by veterans of Bomber Command, including Dambuster George "Johnny" Johnson, would take place next month.
