Sailors from the Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond have taken part in a beach clean in Diego Garcia.

As part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), the Royal Navy crew targeted the beach off the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).

A tweet from HMS Diamond said: "The team collected 175 trash items in just 100 metres, showing the extent of plastic waste reaching even some of the world's most remote and pristine places."

In response to the crew's hard work on the beach, Warrant Officer Carl Steedman said on Twitter it was "great to see".

The ICC is the world's largest volunteer effort to remove and record trash from lakes, waterways, beaches and the ocean right across the world.

HMS Diamond passed through the Suez Canal and set sail to rejoin the Carrier Strike Group (CSG21) after repairs in September

Recently, the Type 45 destroyer celebrated becoming the latest Royal Navy vessel to 'cross the line' and pass the equator in the presence of 'King Neptune'.
