MOD's Union Flag spend more than doubles in last three years

A Union Flag.

British defence spending on Union Flags more than doubled in the space of two years.

Statistics have revealed how much the Ministry of Defence has spent on flags during the previous three financial years.

The spending on Union Flags increased by 115% - from £25,351.97 in 2018/19 to £54,564.50 in 2020/21.

Included in the data, released as part of a Freedom of Information request, are flag purchases under a central defence contract, though individual units can buy flags outside of the contract for their own local arrangements.

The Union Flag can also be known as the 'Union Jack', while there is also correct way up to fly the flag (more on that here).

UK defence spent at least the following (excluding VAT) on flags in the last three complete financial years under the MOD central contract:

2020/2021: £231,096.92 (£54,564.50 on Union Flags)

2019/2020: £291,874.77 (£38,325.47 on Union Flags)

2018/19: £135,649.52 (£25,351.97 on Union Flags)

It works out at a total of £658,621.21 being spent on flags by the MOD in those three financial years combined - £118,241.94 of that being put towards Union Flags.
