Inside the Stormer: The British Army's high-speed ground-based air defence system

Watch: Stormer, with its high-velocity missiles and a panoramic weapon sight

The British Army's Stormer High-Velocity Missile (HVM) system is its only ground-based air defence platform, designed to take down aerial threats at speed.

Armed with eight ready-to-fire Starstreak missiles, the vehicle plays a key role in modern warfare, particularly against drones and aircraft.

The Stormer is fitted with a panoramic weapon sight that's used to lock onto targets, as well as an Air Defence Alerting Device (ADAD) with a Scanner Infrared Assembly (SIA).

The Stormer HVM's high-speed missiles and rapid response capability make it a crucial component in defending against modern drone warfare and other airborne threats.

"It can locate UASs, rotary wings and fixed wings, and it will lock onto the target where it will be able to engage the target effectively," says Lance Bombardier Andrew Kersey of 12 Regiment Royal Artillery.

The vehicle's tight interior is manned by a crew scanning the skies for enemy threats.

On the exterior, camouflage netting helps to conceal the Stormer from aerial detection.

Its detection system uses heat signatures to identify and track targets.

In the video above, the soldier highlighted the growing importance of air defence, particularly in light of the battlefield experiences in Ukraine.

Watch: What the Stormer anti-air system offers Britain and Ukraine

LBdr Kersey said: "We've become more of an asset I believe.

"What's becoming very important in this time of age as we can see in Ukraine UAS and UAVs are being used to destroy Challenger 2s and so other armoured vehicles.

"So for us it's very important that we concentrate on taking out the UAS on UAVs as well as being trained to do so."
