A Ministry of Defence guard is to face disciplinary action after stealing an AK-47 rifle.
The man took the gun from where he worked at the Royal Military Police Museum at Chichester Barracks when it closed in 2005.
At Portsmouth Crown Court, the man's lawyer, said:
"He decided to take the gun as a souvenir."
After deactivating the weapon he stored it in his wardrobe.
The guard was given a 16-month jail term suspended for two years, 100 hours of community service and 20 days of rehabilitation.
A spokesperson for the MoD said: "We are aware of the sentencing of an MoD Guard Service employee.
"The individual will now face an internal disciplinary investigation.
"It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."
