The Ministry of Defence is not commenting on reports that two members of the British Special Forces have been seriously injured in a missile attack by so-called Islamic State (IS) in Syria.

It has been reported an incident took place on Saturday morning.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "We do not comment on Special Forces."

US President Donald Trump said in December he was withdrawing American troops from Syria, where he claimed IS had been defeated.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis abruptly resigned after the announcement and was followed by the appointment of Patrick Shanahan as Acting Defense Secretary.

Mr Trump said: "We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency."

The UK has formed part of the US-led coalition carrying out air strikes against IS in Iraq and Syria in the form of Operation Shader.

The Trump administration is expected to withdraw all of the approximately 2,000 American troops from Syria.
