A Royal Navy bomb squad was called in and homes were evacuated after a man died at a property, police have said.

Officers were called to Spencer Road in Newton Abbot, Devon, at around 4.15pm on Monday following concerns for a man's welfare.

Devon and Cornwall Police said a man was treated at the scene by paramedics but was pronounced dead a short time later.

A spokesman said: "While at the address a number of items were located which require expert analysis from specialist officers and the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Department.

"Police are also being supported by the fire service at the scene.

"A 200m cordon has been put in place and a number of surrounding properties have been evacuated as a precaution while inquiries are ongoing at the property."

With road closures in place, the force said that inquiries are at a very early stage, but that there is not believed to be any wider public risk.
