Defence Buddhist Network Celebrates Vesak 2021

Defence Buddhist Network

The Defence Buddhist Network (DBN) Sangha community celebrated the Vesak holiday on Tuesday.

It marks when Buddha attained complete enlightenment under the Papal tree (later known as Bodhi-tree) more than 2,500 years ago.

Known as 'Buddha Day', it is celebrated on different days of the Buddhist calendar, although the majority celebrate in May or June.

Personnel were invited to celebrate Vesak over a video call by Chair of the DBN, Squadron Leader Ferguson.

There was a range of traditional Buddhist chanting and meditation, as well as a lesson on the significance of the day.

Doctor Sunil Kariyakarawana, Buddhist Chaplain to the Armed Forces, also provided the 'Buddha’s Own Account of the Enlightenment’ to end the session.

Buddha Day holds particular importance in light of the pandemic, serving as a dedication to those who have not only lost their lives, but continue to be affected.
