Second Man Arrested Over Death Of Former Royal Navy Officer

Mike Samwell

A second man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of an ex-Royal Navy officer.

The suspect, 20, was detained by police hunting the killers of Mike Samwell, who died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mr Samwell had been chasing intruders from his home in Chorlton, Manchester, who broke in while he and his wife Jessica were asleep.

The 35-year-old went outside and was run down as the thieves sped off in his Audi S3 car. He was pronounced dead in hospital around an hour later.

The Audi S3 car was recovered by police badly damaged and abandoned three miles away in the Ladybarn area of the city following the raid.

Detectives have asked for information about a blue five-door BMW 1 Series seen in the area, which it is believed was used by the offenders after the incident.

Greater Manchester Police said the suspect is still in police custody for questioning after being held.

Another suspect, a 21-year-old man, was arrested on Monday and has since been released on bail.

Mr Samwell served for 12 years in the Royal Navy, including on board a nuclear attack submarine as a weapons officer.

Since leaving the forces he had worked as a programme manager for engineering firm Atkins in Warrington, Cheshire.
