Man Arrested Over Former Royal Navy Officer's Murder

A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of former Royal Navy officer Mike Samwell, who was killed by burglars who ran him over in his own car.
Michael Samwell, 35, died after going to stop his Audi S3 being taken in the early hours of Sunday in Manchester.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) on Monday said they had arrested a suspect. Detective Superintendent Jon Chadwick from GMP's Serious Crime Division said:
"We have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with Mike Samwell's senseless murder."
"Our investigation is still in its early stages and we are still appealing for the public to help us.
"My thoughts continue to be with Mike's family and friends at this devastating time."
The man is being held on suspicion of murder, Greater Manchester Police said.
His wife and family have been left "devastated" by his death, they added.
Police said Mr Samwell appeared to have been "run over by the vehicle, causing his injuries" as the thieves fled the scene in Cranbourne Road at 3am.
Mr Samwell is thought to have gone down to investigate a "loud bang" that woke him and his wife.
He was found in the parking area behind his home with serious injuries and died a short time later in hospital.
Mr Samwell's car was found abandoned and badly damaged a short time later three miles away in Whitby Avenue in the Ladybarn area of the city.
Since leaving the forces he had worked as a programme manager for engineering firm Atkins in Warrington, Cheshire. An Atkins spokesman said:
"This is a tragic event and our thoughts go out to Mike's family, friends and colleagues. We will support the family in any way we can."
