US General Hits Back At Claims Donald Trump "Made War Widow Cry"

General John Kelley

The White House Chief of Staff has criticised the congresswoman who said that President Trump had insulted and upset a war widow.

General John Kelly said he was "broken-hearted" by the Democrat's criticism of the President's condolence call to Sgt La David Johnson's wife.

In an emotional speech, he said:

"These young men and women are the best 1% that this country produces...they volunteer to protect our country when there is nothing to suggest that service to the nation is either appropriate or required".

The General spoke of his own experience of losing a son:

"Hours after my son was killed, his buddies were calling me telling me what a great guy he was. Those are the only phone calls that really matter".

Sgt Johnson was one of the four servicemen killed by Islamic State (IS) militants in Niger this month.

Kelley also stated that he had not received a call from President Barack Obama when his son died in Afghanistan in 2002.

General Kelley, who himself is a former Marine Corps General, said that the Democrat Representative Frederica Wilson was “an empty barrel”.

The attack which killed Sgt La David Johnson was carried out by militants riding in a dozen vehicles, and around 20 motorcycles.

French fighter jets were called in to support the troops, who were under heavy fire, but the firefight occurred at such close quarters that the planes were unable to engage.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
